Our Journey So Far

Q4 2014

KHAN was conceptualised at a casual lunch meeting of a group of long time friends when the conversation as usual, turned to the state of the nation. There was something different however, at that lunch meeting; the yearning to take action and catalyze the desired change was overwhelming.

There and then, the seeds of KHAN were sown and several conversations ensued as to how to actualize KHAN’s objectives. The name ‘Keep Hope Alive Nigeria’ resonated with all involved and it was decided that would be the name of the initiative.

Q1 2015

An enormous amount of ground work was undertaken to identify the potential focus areas of KHAN. It was quickly decided that the initial focal area should be the vocational sector – a sector largely ignored and underfunded but crucial to the nation’s development and with enormous potential for value creation, especially when considering the burgeoning population of unemployed and poorly educated youth in the society.

Q3 2015

A study of the vocational sector and its ecosystem in Nigeria was undertaken in order to understand the scope of the problem and properly evaluate the transformation potential. This study involved a review of five ‘vocational job families’ but the construction industry stood out. It was thus decided that KHAN would focus first on the construction industry. Our pilot model and areas for intervention were identified, namely:

• Training (core skills and business training)
• Certification
• Job placement
• Collaboration with existing schools
• Enhancement of curriculum
• Improvement of industry standards

Q2 2016

Commenced registration of Keep Hope Alive Nigeria – Regenesis Initiative (KHAN) as the legal vehicle for the initiative. KHAN is registered as an Incorporated Body Trustees.

Q4 2016

KHAN held its inaugural Industry Roundtable with subject-matter experts within the construction industry. Extensive discussions were held and insights given around areas requiring urgent intervention within the industry as KHAN’s vision for a construction sector pilot was shared with like-minded individuals. We were excited to receive a lot of support and commitment from the industry experts.

It became clear that to achieve KHAN’s vision on the desired scale, government intervention, participation and partnership was required.

Q1 2017

With the encouraging endorsement of KHAN’s road map by industry specialists, we then commenced the implementation of the construction sector pilot. We expanded membership, started to build partnerships and…

Our Objectives

• To positively transform the mindset of Nigerians about Nigeria through tangible action, advocacy, policy recommendation, training, role- modelling and mentoring
• To organize, sponsor and/or support seminars and establish educational and training programmes for the acquisition of world-class vocational and organizational skills and entrepreneurial development, personal and professional development and other sectors of interest, in Nigeria
• To, with the co-operation of the relevant regulatory authorities, develop, implement and uphold standards/ benchmarks for the key sectors of interest within the Nigerian economy
• To reach out to the less-opportuned and bring qualitative/ standardised solutions closer to the grassroots
